“Strong arts mean strong schools,” said Charles Fowler at an ASCD conference. Oak Canyon Junior High has an incredible fine arts department with many offerings for your student. The College Entrance Examination Board says: “The arts are valuable in all areas of study because they
- engage the imagination,
- foster flexible ways of thinking,
- develop disciplined effort,
- and build self-confidence.
“The ARTS are a nation’s most precious heritage. For it is our arts that we reveal to ourselves, and to others, the inner vision which guides us as a nation. And where there is no vision, the people perish.” -President Lyndon B. Johnson
“The arts allow us to explore new worlds and to view life from another perspective. They encourage individuals to sharpen their skills and to nurture their imagination and intellect.” – President George W. Bush

Violin, viola, cello, and bass instruction are provided through the orchestra. Occasionally, Oak Canyon orchestra will be combined with Canyon View Orchestra for special events and competitions. For more information visit the Oak Canyon Orchestra website which can be found listed under the faculty directory listing for Teresa Cheney [email protected]
The drama department at Oak Canyon Junior High consists of three levels: Drama 1 (beginning), Drama 2 (intermediate), and Bravo (advanced and auditioned). In drama 1 students have the opportunity to learn and experiment with the basics of communication through performance. We discuss movement, voice and professionalism techniques and students will learn how to successfully perform in front of a group of people by doing activities such as scene performances, monologues, and improvising. Drama 2 focuses on a more in depth study of acting, and we expand on characterization, stage terminology and improvisational skills.
Bravo is not just a class, but a group of actors working together in a full year course where we study more about acting in both a solo and group setting. We also get the chance to delve into the world of stagecraft and we learn what designers and technicians before we produce a play at the end of the year. All of these courses are built to encourage and facilitate group cooperation, creative expression, and self-confidence through activities and theater projects. If you have any questions about the drama program or school productions, contact Andrea Bytheway at [email protected].
“Music is the universal language of mankind.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. There are several choirs available for students to improve their skills in music and singing. Contact Kyle Harper [email protected] at Oak Canyon Junior High for more information about choirs.
